It seems like this has turned into something of a food blog, which was not my intent, but I guess most of what I define as “adventurous” and “a source of happiness” is related to food. ::shrugs::
I am not a good cook, and any culinary skills I do have were acquired recently (i.e. in the last 3 years). So any attempt at a new dish is certainly an adventure for me, my smoke alarm, and my roommate, who eats my cooking with gentle and polite feedback.
I decided, somewhat randomly, to make quiche. Because I don’t own a pie pan, they had to be mini quiches in a muffin tin. I had all of the ingredients except for Bisquick, and the realization that I didn’t know the difference between Bisquick for baking and for pancakes is probably alarming to anyone who actually cooks well. I found a simple recipe for mini quiches and ad libbed the amounts and types of veggies and meat included – I went for bacon, green onion, and intended to add red peppers but forgot them so…
I cooked bacon for the first time unsupervised, choosing to bake it instead of fry it for my forearms’ sake (I’m genuinely afraid of popping oil). Assembling it was easy enough, though I also changed some proportions based on comments on the recipe itself – more Bisquick, more egg.
Despite my wonky oven, my quiches cooked evenly and turned out pretty good-looking if I do say so myself. However, they were a little dry and bland – not what I expected from extra egg and all of those flavorful ingredients (cheddar, bacon, onion). Here’s where my cooking falls short – I don’t really know what to change to get a better result next time. Maybe add milk? More flavorful veggies? Plus I have no idea how to season anything except to put Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning on any and everything.
Overall, I enjoyed myself whilst making these. I would try making them again, though they weren’t totally inedible (obviously, seeing as I ate 4 today…).
